He always points to the soldiers and says, “That spirit – that fire – it started with people like Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.” I used to think Netaji was just a picture in my history book, a serious man in a cap. Subhash Chandra Bose was born on 23 January 1897 in Cuttack, Odisha. His father was a successful lawyer, and their house was full of books and happy children – Subhash was the ninth among fourteen brothers and sisters! Even as a small boy, he was very clever. He loved reading about great leaders and saints like Swami Vivekananda. When he was only fifteen, he ran away from home to search for a guru who could teach him the real meaning of life. He started a party called Forward Bloc because he wanted everyone to move forward together, fast and fearless.

During the Second World War, the British kept Netaji under house arrest. But Netaji was too smart for that! One night, he dressed up as a Pathan gentleman, grew a beard, and quietly walked out of his house. He travelled through many countries – Afghanistan, Russia, Germany – and finally reached Japan. There he formed the Indian National Army, or INA. Thousands of Indian soldiers who were prisoners joined him. Even women joined – there was a special regiment named after Rani Jhansi! Netaji gave the slogan “Give me blood and I will give you freedom.” When I first heard this, I felt a little scared, but Dadi explained that he meant we must work very hard and sacrifice our comfort, just like when we practise for sports day until our legs hurt, but we do it because we want our team to win.

Netaji also gave us the greeting “Jai Hind!” Now every soldier says it proudly. He started a radio station called Azad Hind Radio to spread hope. Even from far away, his voice reached Indian homes and made people believe freedom was near. My grandfather says that during those days, everyone whispered “Jai Hind” secretly because it gave them courage.

Netaji loved children very much. He believed that the future of India was in our hands. He used to say that boys and girls should grow up strong in body and mind. When I play football and fall down, I remember Netaji’s words and get up quickly. When someone teases my little sister in school, I stand up for her just like Netaji stood up for India. Being brave does not mean fighting – it means not staying quiet when something is wrong.

There are many stories about how kind Netaji was. Once, a soldier in INA was very ill. Netaji sat beside him the whole night, giving him water and talking softly. Another time, he shared his own food with hungry soldiers. He treated everyone equally – rich or poor, Hindu or Muslim, boy or girl. That is why everyone called him Netaji – the respected leader.
